Make a Ford Mustang from a Cardboard Box

This is a great project to try just for fun or to make box car racers for events like birthday parties, community events or family gatherings or just to play with at home or in the backyard.

These were designed as an homage to the soap box derby cars from back in the day.  Best of all you can create them using materials found in the recycling bin, common crafting supplies and a cardboard box.

The box cars in the photo were for a community event.  We created prototypes and then held a public workshop to help others build box cars for the event.

The Mustang box car project took about a day to complete.

HOW TO MAKE A FORD MUSTANG FROM A CARDBOARD BOX

MATERIALS

  • Cardboard box
  • Paper towel or wrapping paper cardboard roll
  • Egg carton
  • Coffee can lids x 4 for wheels (or cut 4 cardboard circles and paint them)
  • White glue
  • Hot glue/gun
  • Masking tape
  • Scissors
  • Utility knife
  • Pencil
  • Markers
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brushes

INSTRUCTIONS

Using the design pictured, trace the outline of the Mustang onto the cardboard box, front, sides and back.

Using a utility knife or large scissors cut out the shape.

Sketch on details like the headlights, grill and bumper in pencil on the front. On the bottom of the box draw an opening for the driver to fit in. Cut out the opening and tape the box flaps together if needed. The size of opening depends on the size of the box and the size of the driver, it should be large enough to comfortably fit around the driver’s waist.

We chose red paint for our Mustang but you can paint yours any colour you like.

For the back, sketch rough location of taillights and back bumper etc on the back of the box.

We didn’t get a photo of the finished back of ours but here is the drawing we used for it.

The front almost finished.

If you try this project we’d love to see a photo. Post your masterpiece on Nana’s Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/GetCreativeWithNana
